Introduction

The requirements for each Kyu grade progresses from one to the next, in the means of additional counters to be performed i.e. Yellow to demonstrate 2, Orange 3, Green 4, Blue 6 and Brown 8 – 10 depending of the body contact assault.

The student will demonstrate a variety of techniques from different elements contained within Jujitsu. These include:

  • Self-defence techniques – consisting of low to high level force options i.e. pressure points / striking techniques, release techniques and basic locking techniques,

  • Control techniques – consisting of methods to restrain, use of shield and relocation,

  • Sports techniques – consisting of methods that are effective to counter but not necessarily for safety i.e. throwing and grappling techniques,

  • Art techniques – consisting of methods to demonstrate advanced knowledge of bio-mechanics and anatomy i.e. this may include methods that may be more complex and not as practical for specific situations.

Each technique demonstrated must contain the following criteria:

  • Safety – for both Tori and Uke,

  • Good balance, timing and flow,

  • Correct body movement and bio-mechanics, and

  • Appropriate softening techniques to support whole defence strategy.

The Sensei observing the grading will need to consider:

  • The individuals mental state,

  • Physical ability,

  • Skill level,

  • Fitness,

  • Health conditions, and

  • Target grade requirements (Reaction Time) – This is outlined in the diagram below, detailing the expected cognitive delay of students at differing grade levels. Timings illustrated are generalised and not indicative of individuals technique response, but for continued response of multiple techniques during grading conditions. The ideal response of self-defence should be between 0.4 – 0.5 seconds for a trained practitioner with sound neuromuscular conditioning.
