The Sensei is a conduit of learning, and has a solemn responsibility to teach the whole art in its entirety, by teaching each individual to the best of their abilities. To ensure the standard of the student is maintained to preserve the art for future generations.

Jujitsu is as precious as a museum artefact, the difference is that it is a practical, tangible art form that is living opposed to a rigid artefact on show behind glass.

Jujitsu is a historical art passed onto one, to another by explanation, demonstration and practice.

The perspective student should be of good character, attitude and demonstrates integrity, devotion and perseverance. The student is to be measured by their own merits and personal development to progress within the art.

The Sensei must not hold a student back in their progression for their own selfishness or personal gain, but to foster the student and to give guidance, to build confidence and motivate the student in forming a passion for the art.

The Sensei – student relationship is one of mutual understanding and respect.

The Sensei must care, be attuned to the needs of the student and be mindful of individual differences.

"Without one role the other will not prosper".

Photo above taken at the end of year breakup with my students. The students present a plaque with the following quote:

“Every time I teach, I am teaching you how to beat me. That’s the essence of a good instructor”.

Note: Sensei - direct translation "Born before".
