PROS AND CONS PRACTICING AWAY FROM THE DOJO

The following lists are not extensive and you may wish to provide additional items.

Cons

  • Safety protocols / concerns –

  • Your training partner may not be warmed up

  • You may not be a where of their health status or previous injuries that may affect them during practice.

  • Your training partner may not understand the safety protocols or training i.e. safety tap or degree of technique application

  • You may not have appropriate training equipment that may place you and others at risk

  • If training in an social setting (i.e. park) this may draw unneeded attention

  • Your training partner may wish to test the technique (to resist application or to be over zealous in applying the technique on you) or disprove the technique due to applying softly

  • You are not covered by insurance

  • Instruction –

  • You will not have an instructor observing, to assist with technique modification or correction.

  • You may not have the ability to explain techniques to your training partner

Pros

  • Will create opportunity to hone your technique

  • May allow others to appreciate what you do in training

  • May recruit others to the main class

  • May create opportunities to seek further clarification in class

  • May provide opportunities for self-discovery

  • Identify your limits and knowledge without an instructor present

  • You not paying class fees

  • Training in other environmental conditions may provide you with some realism in defence training
